Description
Woodfordia fruticosa, the fire-flame bush, is a large deciduous shrub of the family Lythraceae, widely distributed across the dry and moist deciduous forests of the Indian subcontinent from the Himalayan foothills to Sri Lanka, as well as in China, Southeast Asia, and tropical Africa. The plant flowers profusely from January to March, producing dense clusters of small, tubular, crimson-red blooms that strikingly colour entire hillsides. In classical Ayurveda, the flowers — known as Dhataki — hold a unique pharmacological role as the primary fermentation-enhancing agent (Sandhanakara) in the preparation of fermented liquid medicines including Asava and Arishta formulations. The Charaka Samhita, Sharangadhara Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam all cite Dhataki in this distinct technical role.
