Description

Curcuma amada, referred to in Ayurvedic literature as Amrataaka and commonly called mango ginger due to the characteristic raw mango fragrance of its freshly cut rhizome, is native to the humid lowland forests and cultivated homesteads of peninsular India. A member of the Zingiberaceae family, it grows as a seasonal herb reaching approximately one metre in height, with lance-shaped leaves and pale yellow inflorescences. Classical Ayurvedic texts document its use in preparations traditionally aimed at supporting digestion and respiratory function. It is also recorded in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita as a component of compound formulations, and remains commercially cultivated in Kerala and Odisha.
