Description

Abelmoschus moschatus, the ambrette plant, is a tropical annual or perennial herb of the family Malvaceae, native to India and Southeast Asia, naturalised across tropical Africa and the Americas. The kidney-shaped seeds carry a remarkable musky, ambergris-like fragrance from the macrocyclic lactone ambrettolide — making ambrette seed one of the most valued plant-derived fragrance materials in classical and contemporary perfumery, where it functions as an animal-musk substitute. Known in Unani medicine as Mushk Dana or Tukham-e-Musk and in Ayurveda as Kasturibhinda, the seeds are documented in classical texts for aromatic, nervine tonic, and carminative preparations. The seeds are also incorporated in classical Unani compounds including Maajun Mumsik preparations for male reproductive vitality. India and Egypt are primary sources of commercial ambrette seed.
