Description

Konch Beej refers to the processed, dried seeds of Mucuna pruriens — the velvet bean — specifically traded under this Hindi designation in the Indian botanical market. The vine, native to the tropical forests and agricultural margins of South Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, is also cultivated commercially in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The large, oval, white-grey or black seeds contain significant concentrations of L-DOPA, a direct precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine, which has attracted considerable pharmacological research. In classical Ayurveda, Kapikacchu seeds are listed in the Vajikarana (aphrodisiac) chapter of the Charaka Samhita and are incorporated into preparations such as Kokilaksha Gutika for supporting male reproductive function, nervous system health, and physical stamina.
