Description
The seed of Phyllanthus emblica — the Indian gooseberry — is an understudied botanical part of one of Ayurveda’s most celebrated medicinal trees. Native to the tropical and subtropical forests of South and Southeast Asia, this deciduous tree produces a small, globose, astringent fruit from which the seed is separated during commercial processing. While the fruit pulp dominates Ayurvedic formulation practice, classical texts including the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu reference the seed for specific traditional applications. Cultivated extensively in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh under government schemes administered by the National Medicinal Plants Board, both fruit and seed continue to be harvested for domestic and export herbal markets.
