Description
Turmeric Powder — Haridra Churna in Sanskrit — is the dried, ground rhizome of Curcuma longa, a perennial rhizomatous herb of the family Zingiberaceae, widely believed to have been first cultivated in the Indian subcontinent over five thousand years ago, now cultivated extensively across India — with Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Maharashtra as primary producing states. India produces approximately 80% of the world’s turmeric. The characteristic vivid yellow-orange colour arises from curcuminoids (curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin), which have attracted over 10,000 published biomedical studies in the 21st century. Known as Haridra in the Charaka Samhita, turmeric is documented across all major Ayurvedic classical texts for blood purification, skin conditions, wound healing, liver support, and joint health. Among the five most globally traded Indian spice-medicine commodities. Listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
