Description

Cypraea moneta, the money cowrie, is a small marine gastropod mollusc of the family Cypraeidae, naturally distributed across the warm intertidal and shallow subtidal zones of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific — from East Africa through India, the Maldives, and Southeast Asia to the Pacific Islands. The smooth, cream-white, ovoid shell was one of the world’s earliest and most widespread currency commodities, historically traded from India and the Maldives across African and Asian trade networks. In Ayurvedic Rasa Shastra, the shell — Kapardika — undergoes classical Shodhana purification through lime processing and Marana incineration to yield Kapardika Bhasma, a calcium carbonate-rich preparation documented in the Sharangadhara Samhita and classical Rasa Shastra texts for formulations addressing digestive hyperacidity, splenomegaly, skin conditions, and general nutritive preparations.
