Description

Nimboli — the whole fruit of Azadirachta indica, the neem tree — represents a distinct product from the separately traded seed kernel (Neem Magaj) and leaf (Neem Patti) forms. The small, olive-like neem drupe consists of a thin, bitter-tasting flesh surrounding the hard endocarp and seed. In classical Ayurveda, the fruit of Nimba is documented in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita for its intensely bitter properties, categorised in preparations addressing parasitic infestations, skin disorders, and digestive complaints. The whole fruit is also consumed as a seasonal bitter food by rural communities in northern and central India during summer months, reflecting a long tradition of dietary bitter tonification. Commercial collection occurs across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh from naturalised and planted neem populations.
