Description

Juniperus communis, the common juniper, is an evergreen coniferous shrub or small tree of the family Cupressaceae, possessing one of the broadest geographic distributions of any plant species in the Northern Hemisphere — extending from the Arctic Circle through Europe, Asia Minor, the Himalayas, and North America. In the Indian subcontinent, it occurs naturally at high altitudes in the Himalayas and is known in Ayurvedic peripheral texts as Hapusha. The fleshy, berry-like seed cones — botanically gymnosperm strobili rather than true berries — mature over two to three years, turning blue-black and developing a waxy bloom. Documented in European, Arabian, and folk traditions for preparations associated with urinary and digestive health, juniper berries also constitute the primary botanical in classical gin production.
