Description
Pavonia odorata, the fragrant swamp mallow, is a small perennial herb or subshrub of the family Malvaceae, native to the open tropical grasslands, waste places, and dry scrublands of the Indian subcontinent and tropical East Africa. The plant produces pink or mauve flowers and an aromatic, mucilaginous root. Known in classical Ayurveda as Hrivera or Lajjalu-associated and documented in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, the root is incorporated in cooling Pitta-alleviating preparations, particularly in the treatment of burning sensations, febrile conditions, and urinary tract discomfort. The root features in classical Ayurvedic compound preparations including Chandanadi Churna and certain ophthalmic formulations. It is listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India as a medicinal herb.
