Description

Nausadar — ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl) — is a naturally occurring mineral sublimate deposited around volcanic fumaroles, coal seam fires, and subterranean combustion zones. Known as Naushadir in classical Unani pharmacopoeia and as Tankana-related mineral in certain Rasa Shastra texts, it is one of the more unusual mineral drugs in the classical South Asian pharmacological tradition. In Unani medicine, Nausadar is classified as a Jama’id (mineral solid) and documented in the Makhzan-ul-Adwiya for preparations addressing respiratory conditions, mucolysis, and digestive complaints. It has also been incorporated in classical Unani fever preparations. After appropriate Shodhana purification, it is used in compound preparations alongside herbal ingredients. Historically sourced from Central Asia and the volcanic regions of the Arabian Peninsula, it is now commercially produced synthetically.
