Description

Swertia chirayita, the Himalayan chiretta, is a tall, slender, annual or biennial herb of the family Gentianaceae, endemic to the sub-alpine and temperate zones of the Himalayan range from Afghanistan through Nepal and Sikkim to Bhutan. Growing characteristically in moist meadows and open forest clearings between 1,200 and 3,000 metres, it is one of the bitterest medicinal plants documented in global botanical literature, attributed to the glycoside amarogentin and swertiamarin. Referenced in the Charaka Samhita as Kiratatikta, it has been traditionally incorporated into Ayurvedic formulations for fever management, liver support, and blood purification. The species is critically threatened by over-harvesting and is subject to collection restrictions in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
