Description

Calendula officinalis, the pot marigold, is an annual or short-lived perennial herb of the family Asteraceae, native to the Mediterranean basin and southwestern Asia and cultivated widely across Europe, North America, and the Indian subcontinent. The plant bears bright orange or yellow composite flower heads, harvested at full bloom and carefully dried for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. Documented in European herbal traditions from the 12th century — including the works of Hildegard of Bingen — and later in the formal pharmacopoeias of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, the ray florets have been traditionally incorporated into preparations addressing wound care, skin inflammation, and mucosal integrity. In India, it is cultivated in Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Maharashtra and finds application in Ayurvedic and Siddha external formulations.
