Description

Acorus calamus, known in Ayurveda as Vacha, is a semi-aquatic monocotyledonous herb of the family Acoraceae, naturally distributed along the margins of freshwater bodies across South Asia, China, Europe, and North America. It forms dense stands in the muddy banks and shallow waters of rivers, ponds, and marshes. The aromatic, horizontally spreading rhizome — which carries a distinctive sweet, camphoraceous fragrance — is documented in the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam as a Medhya (cognitive) herb, traditionally incorporated into preparations for supporting speech, memory, and nervous function. It is also referenced in ancient Greek and Egyptian medical texts, demonstrating its transcultural pharmacological significance across millennia.
