Description

Trachyspermum ammi, carom or ajwain, is a slender annual herb of the family Apiaceae, of uncertain geographic origin — possibly the Near East or Egypt — now cultivated extensively across the Indian subcontinent, particularly Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, as one of India’s most commercially significant spice crops. The small, grey-green seeds carry an intensely pungent, thyme-like aroma from their essential oil, which contains up to 50% thymol — a monoterpene phenol with documented antimicrobial activity. Documented in the Charaka Samhita as Yavani or Ajamoda and in Unani pharmacopoeia as Nankhah, ajwain seeds are incorporated in classical Ayurvedic formulations for digestive complaints, carminative action, and respiratory preparations. The classical formulation Ajmodadi Churna incorporates ajwain as a primary ingredient. Listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
