Description

Bacopa monnieri, designated in Ayurveda as Brahmi — one of the four classical Medhya Rasayana herbs — is a small, fleshy, creeping perennial of the family Plantaginaceae, native to the wetlands, marshy banks, and shallow aquatic environments of the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, and much of Southeast Asia. It extends its habitat through tropical Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Growing in waterlogged soils and muddy banks along rivers and ponds, it produces small white flowers and ovate succulent leaves. The Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita both document Brahmi as a primary herb for supporting cognitive function, memory retention, and nervous system health. Cultivated commercially in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala for both domestic formulation and international export.
