Vidhara Beej — the seeds of Argyreia nervosa — represent a distinct commercial product from the root of the same plant (Samundra Shosh), reflecting different parts of the elephant creeper vine with distinct phytochemical profiles. Argyreia nervosa is a large woody climber of the family Convolvulaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical forests of the Indian subcontinent and coastal regions of East Africa. The hard, dark seeds are enclosed within the bright red berry and contain ergoline alkaloids including ergine (D-lysergic acid amide) and isoergine — compounds structurally related to ergot alkaloids that have attracted phytochemical research attention. In classical Ayurvedic texts, Vidhara (the plant name) is documented for nervine, aphrodisiac, and anti-rheumatic formulations. The seeds specifically are referenced in certain regional Nighantus and in ethnobotanical surveys for nervous system and male reproductive preparations.
