Description

Embelia ribes, the false black pepper or Vidanga, is a large woody climber of the family Primulaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical forests of the Indian subcontinent — from the foothills of the Himalayas through peninsular India and Sri Lanka — as well as Southeast Asia. The plant produces elongated, racemose clusters of small, round, blackish fruits that superficially resemble black pepper berries. The fruits contain embelin — a benzoquinone derivative — documented as the primary anthelminthic (worm-expelling) active constituent in numerous phytochemical studies. In classical Ayurveda, Vidanga is cited in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita as one of the primary anthelminthic drugs, specifically referenced in the Krimi (parasite) chapter. It is also incorporated in formulations for metabolic conditions (Prameha) and as a component of classical compound preparations including Vidangasava. Listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
