Description

Seep — the oyster shell — refers to the calcareous bivalve shell of Ostrea edulis (the flat oyster) and closely related Ostrea species harvested from marine coastal environments. In Ayurvedic Rasa Shastra, oyster shell is known as Shukti and is processed through classical Shodhana (purification) by repeated washing and heating, followed by Marana (incineration) with specific herbal media to produce Mukta Shukti Bhasma — a fine white powder rich in calcium carbonate used in cardiac, digestive acidity, and nutritive Rasayana formulations. Documented in the Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya and classical Rasa Shastra texts, Shukti Bhasma is incorporated in preparations such as Praval Panchamrit for gastric hyperacidity and Mukta Shukti Bhasma for cardiac and nervous system conditions. Shell is collected from the marine fisheries of the Malabar coast, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.
