Description

Cressa cretica, the alkali weed, is a small, erect, perennial halophytic herb of the family Convolvulaceae, native to the saline flats, coastal sands, and arid land margins of the Mediterranean, Middle East, Central Asia, and the Indian subcontinent — particularly Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Sindh — as well as Australia. The plant thrives in soils with high salt content where most other vegetation cannot survive, an ecological adaptation reflected in its Hindi designation. The small fruits and whole plant are documented in Ayurvedic materia medica under the name Rudravanti for preparations associated with urinary tract conditions and Kshara (alkaline) formulations. Regional ethnobotanical surveys record the plant’s use in traditional preparations for renal and urinary conditions across Gujarat and Sindh. The plant is also referenced in classical Unani literature for saline alkaline condition formulations.
