Description

Callicarpa macrophylla, the beauty berry, is a large deciduous shrub of the family Lamiaceae, native to the subtropical Himalayan zone and the hilly regions of northern India, Nepal, and Bhutan, growing in moist forest margins and shaded ravines at 800–2,500 metres elevation. The plant produces dense clusters of small, vivid violet-purple berries in late autumn that persist on the leafless branches through winter, creating a striking ornamental display. Known in classical Ayurveda as Priyangu and documented in the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam, the seeds and flowers are incorporated in preparations for skin health, haemorrhagic conditions, and female reproductive formulations. The plant also appears in classical texts in the context of uterine health and post-partum preparations. The seeds are traded from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand herbal markets.
