Description
What is Nimboli?
Nimboli, also called neem fruit or neem berry (Hindi: निम्बोली / निंबोली, Sanskrit: Nimba phala), is the fruit of the neem tree, Azadirachta indica. The fresh fruit is a small oval drupe about 1.5–2 cm long. It’s green when young and turns yellow as it ripens during the Indian monsoon. Each fruit has a thin, bitter pulp around a hard shell with one seed inside. Nimboli is different from neem seed kernel (Neem Magaj) and neem leaves (Neem Patti), which we stock separately.
Other names
Neem fruit, neem berry, Nimboli, Nimbouri, Limbodi (Gujarati), Vepampazham (Tamil), Bevina hannu (Kannada), Siamese neem / Sadao (Thailand).
Traditional and household uses
- Mentioned under Nimba in classical Ayurvedic texts, where neem is known for its strongly bitter taste.
- Crushed for home-made neem oil, and the leftover cake is used as natural manure.
- Popular in organic kitchen gardens for making neem sprays.
- In Thailand, a related neem variety (sadao) is eaten as a seasonal bitter vegetable.
How to judge good quality
Good nimboli is whole, evenly dried and yellow-brown to olive, with a clean bitter smell. There should be no mould, dust or broken pieces. We sort and clean every batch by hand before packing.
Storage
Keep it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Stored properly, it keeps its quality for up to 12 months.
FAQs
Is nimboli the same as neem seed?
No. Nimboli is the whole fruit, including the pulp, shell and seed. Neem seed kernel (Neem Magaj) is only the inner seed.
