Description

Nasfal — dried pomegranate peel — is derived from Punica granatum, the pomegranate tree, an ancient fruit crop believed to have originated in the region from Iran through northern India and cultivated across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and South Asia for at least five thousand years. The hard, leathery peel, separated from the red arils and dried, is extraordinarily rich in ellagitannins — primarily punicalagins — which hydrolyse to ellagic acid, a polyphenol of significant phytochemical interest. In classical Ayurveda, Dadima Tvak (pomegranate peel) is documented in the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam as a primary astringent for diarrhoea, colitis, and intestinal preparations. In Unani medicine, pomegranate peel features in Jawarish and compound digestive preparations. Commercially sourced from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Karnataka pomegranate orchards.
