Description

Origanum majorana, sweet marjoram, is a soft, aromatic perennial herb of the family Lamiaceae, native to Cyprus, Turkey, and the eastern Mediterranean region, cultivated widely as a culinary herb across Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. The plant produces small, grey-green ovate leaves with a warm, camphoraceous, slightly floral scent from its essential oil content of terpinen-4-ol, sabinene hydrate, and linalool. Documented in the works of Dioscorides and Pliny as Amaracum, it entered Indian botanical records during colonial-era surveys. Known as Marubaka in Sanskrit references, the dried herb has been incorporated into Ayurvedic peripheral preparations for respiratory comfort and nervous system calm. It is cultivated in limited quantities in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand for the Indian essential oil and spice market.
