Description

Solanum nigrum, black nightshade, is a highly variable annual herb of the family Solanaceae, one of the most cosmopolitan weed-plants on Earth, distributed across temperate and tropical zones on all inhabited continents. The plant colonises disturbed habitats, agricultural land, and garden margins. Known in Ayurveda as Kakamachi and documented in the Charaka Samhita within the Dashemani Shothahara (anti-oedema) group, the aerial parts are incorporated in preparations for hepatic support, skin conditions, and urinary disorders. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu specifically references it as a liver-protective herb. Despite its Solanaceae membership, processed berries are consumed as a food vegetable in southern India, and tribal communities across Odisha and Maharashtra utilise the plant leaves as a cooked green vegetable.
