Description

Lepidium sativum, garden cress, is a peppery, fast-growing annual herb of the family Brassicaceae, believed to have originated in Persia and the Near East and introduced to India during early Islamic contact — now cultivated widely across the subcontinent, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Europe. The small, reddish-tan seeds — known in Unani medicine as Habb-ul-Rashad or Asalio in Gujarati markets — have been documented in the Qarabadeen Jadid and regional Unani texts as a nutritive, galactagogue, and iron-supplementing traditional food preparation. Consumed commonly in halim (a nutritional porridge preparation) in Maharashtra and Rajasthan, particularly postpartum, the seeds have been incorporated into formulations addressing lactation support, bone nutrition, and general nutritive tonification. India cultivates the crop principally in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
