Description
Originating predominantly in India and other tropical regions, Plumbago zeylanica is a perennial shrub recognized in Ayurveda for its strong heating (ushna) potency. The medicinal power resides mainly in its root, known as Chitrakmool, which contains active compounds such as plumbagin. This herb is traditionally utilized to balance Kapha and Vata doshas, specifically targeting the removal of ‘Ama’ or metabolic waste from the body.
One of its primary benefits is the stimulation of Agni (digestive fire), which aids in the treatment of indigestion and supports healthy weight management by accelerating lipid metabolism. Beyond the gut, it is frequently employed in external applications as a paste to relieve joint inflammation, arthritis, and various skin ailments due to its antimicrobial and analgesic properties. It also serves as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus from the respiratory tract. Due to its intense potency, the root is typically undergone a purification process called ‘Shodhana’ before consumption to ensure safety. When used correctly, Chitrakmool acts as a powerful detoxifier and rejuvenator, enhancing overall vitality and systemic health.
