Description
Parmelia perlata, known as Shaileyam in classical Sanskrit and Chadeela or Pathar Phool in Hindi, is a foliaceous lichen of the family Parmeliaceae, occurring on the bark of deciduous trees, rocky outcrops, and stone walls in moist, shaded environments across the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas, Sri Lanka, and equatorial Africa. Lichens are composite organisms formed by a fungal partner and photosynthetic algae or cyanobacteria. Chadeela is referenced in classical Ayurvedic texts including the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, where it is listed among aromatic substances used in preparations for skin health and blood-related formulations. It is also an indispensable culinary spice in North Indian Dum Biryani and Chettinad cuisine, prized for its distinctive earthy, smoky fragrance.
