Description
Lagerstroemia speciosa, known as the giant crape myrtle or banaba, is a large tropical and subtropical deciduous tree of the family Lythraceae, native to South and Southeast Asia — particularly the Philippines, India, Malaysia, and southern China. It grows naturally along riverbanks, forest margins, and open tropical woodland, producing large showy purple-pink flower clusters followed by woody capsular fruits. The leaves, which contain corosolic acid and ellagitannins, have been documented in Philippine folk medicine and Ayurvedic peripheral references in connection with blood sugar regulation in traditional practice. Cultivated in parts of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, banaba leaf has attracted phytochemical investigation and is commercially traded in the Asian herbal supplement market.
