Description

Withania somnifera, known in Ayurveda as Ashwagandha and botanically classified within the family Solanaceae, is a small, erect, woody shrub native to the arid and semi-arid zones of the Indian subcontinent, the Mediterranean basin, and northern Africa. It grows naturally in well-drained sandy or gravelly soils of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, where it is also intensively cultivated under NMPB guidance. Cited as a premier Rasayana herb in the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam, Ashwagandha root has been traditionally incorporated into formulations intended to support physical endurance, nervous system function, and reproductive vitality. It remains one of the highest-volume exported Indian medicinal plants globally.
