Description
Phyllanthus emblica, widely known as the Indian gooseberry or Amla, is a medium-sized deciduous tree native to tropical and subtropical South and Southeast Asia, naturally distributed across dry deciduous forests from the Himalayan foothills to Sri Lanka. Botanically described in ancient Ayurvedic texts including the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam, the fruit holds a pre-eminent position in classical Rasayana therapy and remains central to formulations such as Triphala and Chyawanprash. Traditionally included in preparations intended to support the body’s adaptive capacity, the dried fruit is one of the most extensively traded medicinal plant commodities in India, regulated under National Medicinal Plants Board frameworks.
