The neem tree (Azadirachta indica) gives the herb trade several distinct products. Buyers often search for them by their Hindi names — nimboli, neem gond, neem patti — without knowing how they differ. This guide explains what each one is, how it is traded, and what to check before you buy.
Nimboli (neem fruit)
Nimboli is the whole fruit of the neem tree: a small, olive-shaped drupe that ripens from green to yellow and is sold dried. It is a different product from neem magaj, which is the separated seed kernel, and from neem oil, which is pressed from those kernels.
What to check: uniform size, a clean yellow-brown colour without mould, and low moisture. Dried nimboli should rattle slightly and not feel sticky.
Neem gond (neem gum)
Neem gond, also searched as neem ka gond or gond neem, is the natural gum that seeps from the bark of the neem tree and dries into amber-coloured lumps or tears. It is collected by hand and graded by colour, clarity and how cleanly it is separated from bark.
What to check: lighter, clearer pieces are generally the better grades; dark pieces with bark fragments or dust are lower grades. The gum should dissolve slowly in water.
Neem leaves (neem patti)
Dried neem leaves are the most widely traded neem product. They are sold whole, cut or powdered, and are used in traditional preparations and in herbal and cosmetic formulations.
What to check: a green (not brown or yellow) colour, a clean bitter smell, and few stems. Powder should be fine and free of grit.
Neem bark (neem chaal)
Neem bark is stripped from mature trees and sold in dried pieces or as powder. It is traded separately from the gum, even though the gum forms on the bark.
