Description

Acacia concinna, the soapnut acacia, is a thorny climbing shrub of the family Fabaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical forests of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, commonly growing in hedges, forest margins, and scrubland. The long, flat, dark green seed pods — commercially designated Shikakai, meaning ‘fruit for the hair’ — contain saponins that produce a gentle, low-pH lather in water, making them a traditional scalp and hair cleanser without the alkalinity of synthetic surfactants. Documented in Ayurvedic texts as Charmakaasa and referenced in classical hair-care preparations (Keshya formulations), Shikakai pods are incorporated in Ayurvedic hair oils, powdered dry shampoos, and compound cleansing preparations. The South Indian Ayurvedic hair care tradition incorporates Shikakai as a primary botanical cleanser. Commercially harvested from Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.
