Description
Rasaut is a concentrated, solid aqueous extract produced from the stem wood and roots of Berberis aristata — the Indian barberry — through a traditional process of boiling in water, straining, and evaporating the resulting decoction to a solid consistency. This preparation concentrates the primary active alkaloid berberine to higher potency than the raw plant material. One of the earliest forms of standardised botanical extract in Ayurvedic pharmacy, Rasaut is documented in the Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam for ophthalmic preparations (particularly Anjana — eye collyrium), liver-supporting formulations, and blood-purifying compound medicines. In Unani pharmacopoeia, it is designated Rasaut and features in classical ophthalmic and hepatic preparations. The extract is commercially produced from Berberis roots sourced from Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Nepal.
