Description

Strychnos potatorum, the clearing nut tree, is a medium-sized deciduous tree of the family Loganiaceae, native to the dry deciduous forests of peninsular India — particularly Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra — and Sri Lanka. Distinguished from the related Strychnos nux-vomica by its non-toxic seeds (unlike the strychnine-bearing nux vomica), Nirmal Beej has been used for centuries by rural communities to clarify drinking water: when the interior of a seed is rubbed around the inside of a clay pot, it deposits a colloid that causes suspended particles to flocculate and settle. Known in Ayurveda as Kataka or Nirmali, the seeds are documented in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita for ophthalmic Anjana preparations and water purification. They are also referenced in preparatory Shodhana processes for other mineral drugs.
