Description
Momordica charantia, the bitter gourd, is a climbing annual vine of the family Cucurbitaceae, native to tropical Asia — most likely originating in the Indian subcontinent or South China — and now cultivated pantropically as a vegetable and medicinal plant. The mature red fruit splits to reveal seeds coated with a bright red aril, and the seeds themselves have been investigated for charantin and polypeptide-p, compounds of phytochemical interest. In classical Ayurveda, the plant is known as Karavellaka and has been cited in the Charaka Samhita in the context of Prameha (metabolic disorders). The seeds are traditionally included in formulations associated with blood glucose regulation and parasitic conditions across South Asian, Caribbean, and West African healing traditions.
