Swarna Makshik — literally ‘gold fly’ in Sanskrit, referring to its golden metallic lustre — is chalcopyrite, a naturally occurring copper-iron sulfide mineral (CuFeS₂) of the tetragonal crystal system, one of the most abundant copper ore minerals globally. In Ayurvedic Rasa Shastra — the science of mineral preparations — Swarna Makshik is classified as a Ratna Dhatu (precious mineral) and processed through elaborate Shodhana (purification via multiple oil-heating cycles) and Marana (incineration with herbal media) procedures as described in the Rasa Tarangini and Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya. The resulting Swarna Makshik Bhasma is documented for preparations addressing iron deficiency anaemia (Panduroga), skin conditions, and general Rasayana formulations.
