Description

Suhaga — borax — is the naturally occurring hydrated sodium borate mineral (Na₂B₄O₇·10H₂O) found as evaporite deposits in arid lake beds, volcanic regions, and salt flat environments, with major global deposits in Turkey (Boron), California (Searles Lake), and the Tibetan Plateau. Known in classical Ayurveda as Tankana and in Unani pharmacopoeia as Suhaga, borax is one of the foundational flux and catalyst substances in classical Shodhana (mineral purification) processes — described in the Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya as an indispensable agent for purifying and processing metals and other minerals in compound preparation. In direct pharmaceutical application, Suhaga is documented in preparations for oral hygiene (gum and tooth conditions), throat infections, and skin applications. Ayurvedic roasted Suhaga (Tankana Bhasma) is used in respiratory and oral health formulations.
