Shingraf — cinnabar — is the naturally occurring form of mercury sulfide (HgS), a brilliant vermilion-red mineral of the trigonal crystal system, occurring as the principal ore of mercury in hydrothermal vein deposits in association with pyrite, stibnite, and native mercury. Major global sources include Hunan Province (China), Almadén (Spain), and Idrija (Slovenia). In classical Unani pharmacopoeia, Shingraf is listed in the Makhzan-ul-Adwiya as a mineral drug requiring extensive Shodhana (purification) — including heating, washing with herbal liquids, and specific neutralisation procedures — before any pharmaceutical application. In Ayurvedic Rasa Shastra, Hingul (cinnabar) is documented as the primary source material for Shuddha Parada (purified mercury) extraction. The substance carries significant mercury toxicity and is subject to strict regulatory controls under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act in India.
