Description

Foeniculum vulgare, fennel, is a perennial aromatic herb of the family Apiaceae, native to the rocky, dry Mediterranean shores, now cultivated globally across temperate and subtropical zones as a major culinary spice and medicinal plant. India — particularly Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh — is among the world’s leading fennel producers and exporters. The oval, ribbed seeds carry a characteristic anise-like sweetness from anethole, their primary essential oil constituent, making them a widely consumed mouth freshener and digestive spice across South Asia. Documented in the Ebers Papyrus, in the Charaka Samhita as Shatapushpa, in Dioscorides, Avicenna, and all major world herbal traditions, fennel represents one of the most consistently documented medicinal plants in world pharmaceutical history. Incorporated in carminative, galactagogue, and anti-spasmodic Ayurvedic and Unani preparations. Listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
