Althaea officinalis is a perennial herb native to western and central Asia and the eastern Mediterranean, naturalized across Europe and parts of South Asia. Its thick, mucilaginous root — the source of the original marshmallow confection — has been continuously documented in Unani and European herbal traditions for over two thousand years for respiratory and gastric demulcent formulations.
