Description
Piplamool — the root of Piper longum, the long pepper vine — is a distinct Ayurvedic drug entity from the fruit spikes of the same plant, despite sharing the same species name. The long pepper vine is native to the tropical forests of northeastern India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia, climbing on other plants in humid forest habitats. In classical Ayurvedic pharmacology, Pippali Mool (long pepper root) is specifically distinguished from the fruit in the Charaka Samhita and cited in the context of Agni deepana (digestive fire enhancement), respiratory preparations, and Anulomana (directional) formulations. The root contains piperine, piperlongumine, and related alkaloids with slightly different relative concentrations compared to the fruit. It is listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India as a separate drug monograph from the fruit. Commercially sourced from Assam, Meghalaya, and Tamil Nadu.
