Description

Delphinium denudatum, the Himalayan larkspur, is a perennial herb of the family Ranunculaceae, native to the sub-alpine and temperate Himalayan meadows from Afghanistan and Pakistan through Jammu and Kashmir to Uttarakhand and Nepal. The tuberous root contains diterpenoid alkaloids including denudatine and condelphine, which have attracted phytochemical research for their documented neuropharmacological properties. Known in Unani medicine as Jadwar and in Ayurveda as Nirvisha — ‘free of poison,’ reflecting its classical detoxifying applications — the root is documented in Avicenna’s Canon, the Makhzan-ul-Adwiya, and classical Ayurvedic texts for preparations addressing joint pain, spasmodic conditions, and nervous system applications. A protected species in Jammu and Kashmir due to over-collection, commercial supply now includes cultivated and Pakistan/Afghanistan sourced material.
