Description
Raphanus sativus, the radish, is an annual or biennial herb of the family Brassicaceae, widely regarded as one of the first vegetables cultivated by ancient civilisations — depicted in Egyptian tomb paintings and documented in ancient Greek and Roman agricultural literature. The oil-rich seeds of the bolted radish plant are a distinct commercial product in Indian herbal markets, documented in Unani pharmacopoeia as Buzrul Fujl for preparations associated with digestive stimulation, liver function, and urinary health. The seeds contain glucosinolates and a fixed oil used in traditional South Asian culinary and medicinal preparation. In Ayurvedic peripheral references, radish seeds are cited for Moolaka-related formulations in conditions affecting the liver and gallbladder. Radish is extensively cultivated across northern India, particularly in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
