Description

Methi Powder — the dried, ground seeds of Trigonella foenum-graecum, the fenugreek plant — is one of India’s most commercially significant spice-herb powder exports, produced primarily in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. Trigonella foenum-graecum is an annual herb of the family Fabaceae, believed to have been first cultivated in the Near East and now grown globally as a culinary spice, livestock fodder, and pharmaceutical source crop. The seeds contain steroidal saponins (diosgenin, tigogenin), fenugreekine alkaloid, galactomannan dietary fibre (up to 28%), and coumarins. In classical Ayurveda, the seeds — Methika — are documented in the Charaka Samhita for digestive, galactagogue, and Vata-alleviating preparations. In modern nutraceutical applications, the galactomannan fibre has attracted research for its role in postprandial glycaemic management. Listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
