Ipomea sepiaria (also referenced as Lakshmana in certain Ayurvedic contexts), a slender annual or perennial climber of the family Convolvulaceae, is native to the tropical hedgerow habitats, disturbed forests, and agricultural margins of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. In classical Ayurvedic literature, the herb known as Lakshmana is associated with women’s reproductive wellness and uterine-wellness formulations. It forms part of the Ashtavarga group in certain classical Rasayana listings. However, botanical identity for the classical drug Lakshmana remains contested among Ayurvedic botanists, with Ipomea sepiaria representing one of several plants so identified across different regional traditions.
