Description
Careya arborea, commonly known as Bay Khumba or Vakumbha, is a medium-sized deciduous tree indigenous to the tropical regions of India and Sri Lanka. It typically thrives in moist soils and is frequently found along forest fringes. In Ayurvedic traditions, various parts of the tree—particularly the bark, roots, and leaves—are harvested for their diverse therapeutic applications. The bark is most prized for its strong astringent and antimicrobial properties, making it an effective remedy for managing chronic dysentery and stopping internal bleeding. When processed into a paste and applied topically, it helps accelerate the healing of wounds and treats various inflammatory skin ailments. Additionally, decoctions of the plant are used in oral care to strengthen gums and treat gingivitis. The medicinal efficacy of the plant is attributed to its rich content of tannins and flavonoids, which provide significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. By helping to regulate bodily secretions and combat pathogens, Bay Khumba serves as a versatile botanical resource for improving both gastrointestinal health and skin integrity within holistic wellness practices.
