Description
Hemidesmus indicus, known in Ayurveda as Anantmool and commonly called Indian sarsaparilla, is a slender, twining undershrub native to the Indian subcontinent, extending from the Gangetic plains through peninsular India and into Sri Lanka. It favours open scrubland, grassland margins, and dry deciduous forest edges, where it climbs over low shrubs with its opposite, elliptic leaves and distinctive vanilla-scented roots. Referenced extensively in the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam, the root has been traditionally incorporated into Ayurvedic formulations associated with blood purification, skin care, and cooling therapies. Listed in the National Formulary of Ayurvedic Medicine, it remains an important export-quality medicinal root.
