Description
Lodhra — the bark of Symplocos racemosa — represents the standard commercial bark grade traded in Indian wholesale markets, distinct from the separately listed Lodh Pathani Bark entry which may reflect a regional or graded market designation. Symplocos racemosa is an evergreen small tree or shrub of the family Symplocaceae, native to the subtropical forests of the Himalayan foothills, Assam, West Bengal, and the Eastern Ghats. Among the most specifically documented gynaecological herbs in classical Ayurvedic literature, Lodhra bark is cited in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita for preparations associated with leucorrhoea, uterine tonification, and postpartum recovery. The bark contains alkaloids loturine, colloturine, and a series of tannins. It is a primary ingredient of Pushyanuga Churna — listed in the Ayurvedic Formulary of India for female reproductive health. Listed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India.
