Ras Sindoor is a classical Ayurvedic Rasa Shastra preparation — not a raw mineral but a multi-step processed compound — produced by the intensive trituration of purified mercury and sulfur with herbal media (Bhavana liquids), followed by specific incineration protocols producing a bright red, fine powder. Entirely distinct from raw cinnabar (Shingraf/Hingul), Ras Sindoor undergoes extensive detoxification via Shodhana and Marana procedures described in classical Rasa Shastra texts including the Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya and Rasa Tarangini.
